What is the PSA Test?

The Basics

PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen. It's a simple blood test that measures a protein produced by both normal and malignant cells in the prostate gland.

What It Tells Us

It acts like a dashboard gauge, read against your age. A baseline number helps flag issues early—and while a higher reading raises the odds of a problem worth investigating, it's only a starting point, never a diagnosis.

What It Doesn't Tell

A high PSA does not automatically mean cancer. Enlarged prostate (BPH), infections, sexual activity, or even riding a bicycle can temporarily raise your numbers.

Watching the Speedometer

One PSA test is just a snapshot. We'll put it all together with a quick evaluation and education.

01

Confirm the Reading

If your PSA is elevated, we'll provide some recommendations and repeat the test to confirm your value.

02

Evaluate the Trend

We'll evaluate the rate of your PSA change along with other features. Specialized urine and blood tests may be checked—most non-invasive in nature.

03

The Bigger Picture

If trends are concerning, a special MRI scan would be performed to evaluate the prostate gland. Thereafter, your Pit Stop team can assist you in making any follow up plans and/or treatment decisions should a cancer be identified.

The Biggest Misconception

"If my PSA is high and I have prostate cancer, I immediately need surgery or weeks of radiation."

The Truth

Many prostate cancers are slow-growing. For low-risk disease, active surveillance—careful monitoring instead of immediate treatment—is the recommended standard, and appropriately selected men have a 10-year cancer-specific survival near 99%. When treatment is needed, advances like 5-day radiation therapy (SBRT) exist. Your PSA, along with MRI and biopsy results, helps determine how aggressive the cancer is and whether you are a candidate for these shorter, highly-targeted treatments.
